Pet of the Year Award

Debbie Parkhurst was about to choke to death on a piece of apple in her Maryland home when her Golden Retriever jumped on her chest forcing the apple to pop out of her throat.

When the Keesling family would have perished due to carbon monoxide poising from a gas pump malfunction in their basement, their cat Winnie clawed at wife Cathy’s hair until she woke up and called for help.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals honored these two pets with the Pet of the Year Award.

Strange enough both of these pets were saved in infancy. Toby the Golden Retriever was 4 weeks old when he was thrown into garbage pale to die. Winnie the cat was hiding under a barn only a week old about to die when the Keesling husband discovered her and keep her alive through feedings with an eyedropper.
